Sanctification is not an instantaneous but a progressive work, as obedience is continuous. Bible sanctification is a conformity to the will of God, attained by rendering obedience to His law, through faith in his Son. There is no genuine sanctification except through obedience to the truth; and the psalmist declares, “Thy law is the truth.” It is only when the law of God is set aside, and men have no standard of right, no means to detect sin, that erring mortals can claim perfect holiness. But let none deceive themselves with the belief that God will accept and bless them while they are willfully violating one of His requirements. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Pro 4:23 The greatest difficulty in conversion, is, to win the heart to God; and the greatest difficulty after conversion, is, to keep the heart with God. Here lies the very pinch and stress of true religion; here is that which makes the way to life a narrow way and the gate to heaven a strait gate.
In the religious life of every soul who is finally victorious there will be scenes of terrible perplexity and trial; but his knowledge of the Scriptures will enable him to bring to mind the encouraging promises of God, which will comfort his heart and strengthen his faith in the power of the Mighty One. We must not look on trial as punishment. Christ is the Sin-bearer. He is our Redeemer, and He desires to purify us from all dross. He means to make us partakers of the divine nature, developing in us the peaceable fruits of righteousness. The very fact that we are called upon to endure trials proves that the Lord Jesus sees in us something very precious that He would have developed.
Our present work is to come out from the world and be separate. This is the only way we can walk with God, as did Enoch. We must meet the Conditions laid down in the Word of God or die in our sins. We must know what moral changes are essential to be made in our characters, through the grace of Christ, in order to be fitted for the mansions above.
Are you a Christian? Or are you you a real Christian? There are many who profess to be Christ’s followers but “they are not all Israel, which are of Israel.” We are going to look at 33 scriptures which tell us, “what a christian should be,” and we also are going to look at 30 scriptures of “what a christian should not be.”

The end of all things is at hand, it is necessary for every soul to have the truth planted in the heart, because the night cometh, when no man can work. We have been asleep, as it were, regarding the work that may be accomplished by the circulation of well-prepared literature. Let us now, by the wise use of periodicals and books, preach the word with determined energy. If there was ever a time when SACRIFICES should be made, it is NOW. Those who have money should understand that now is the time to use it for God. The publications will do a far greater work than can be accomplished by the ministry of the word alone.
The apocrypha of the New Testament attempts to supply the silence of the Scriptures in reference to the early life of Christ, by giving a fancy sketch of his childhood years. These writers relate wonderful incidents and miracles, which characterized his childhood, and distinguished him from other children. They relate fictitious tales, and frivolous miracles, which they say he wrought, attributing to Christ the senseless and needless display of his divine power, and falsifying his character by attributing to him acts of revenge, and deeds of mischief, which were cruel and ridiculous. In what marked contrast is the history of Christ, as recorded by the evangelists, which is beautiful in its natural simplicity, with these unmeaning stories, and fictitious tales. They are not at all in harmony with his character. They are more after the order of the novels that are written, which have no foundation in truth; but the characters delineated are of fancy creating.
There must be NO long discussions, presenting NEW THEORIES in regard to the prophecies which God has already made plain. As the churches depart more and more widely from the truth, and ally themselves more closely with the world, the time will come when those who fear and honor God can No Longer Remain in connection with them. How carefully we should improve the little remaining period of our probation! How earnestly we should examine ourselves!
The day of God’s vengeance is just upon us. The seal of God will be placed upon the foreheads of those only who sigh and cry for the abominations done in the land. Those who link in sympathy with the world are eating and drinking with the drunken and will surely be destroyed with the workers of iniquity. There are only two classes in the world today, and only two classes will be recognized in the judgment—those who violate God’s law and those who obey it. Our own course of action will determine whether we shall receive the seal of the living God, or be cut down by the destroying weapons. The work you have now to do is to overcome your own wrongs, battle with your strong internal foes.
It should be the determination of every soul who desires to enter the pearly gates, not so much to seek to understand all about the conditions that will prevail in the future state, as to know what the Lord requires of him in this life. It is the will of God that each professing Christian shall perfect a character after the divine similitude. By studying the character of Christ revealed in the word, by practicing His virtues, the believer will be changed into the same likeness of goodness and mercy. Christ’s works of self-denial and sacrifice brought into the daily life, will develop in the soul the faith that works by love and purifies the soul. There are many who wish to evade the cross-bearing part, but the Lord speaks to all when He said, “If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”Mat 16:24
“Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” Philippians 1:6 Sanctification is not the work of a moment, an hour, a day, but of a lifetime. It is not gained by a happy flight of feeling, but is the result of constantly dying to sin, and constantly living for Christ. Wrongs cannot be righted nor reformations wrought in the character by feeble, intermittent efforts. It is only by long, persevering effort, sore discipline, and stern conflict, that we shall overcome. We know not one day how strong will be our conflict the next. So long as Satan reigns, we shall have self to subdue, besetting sins to overcome; so long as life shall last, there will be no stopping place, no point which we can reach and say, I have fully attained. Sanctification is the result of lifelong obedience.
But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 2Cor. 11:3 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. 2Tim. 3:13 Christ foresaw that the undue assumption of authority practiced by the Scribes and Pharisees would not cease with the dispersion of the Jews. He had a prophetic view of the work of exalting human authority to rule the conscience, which has been so terrible a curse to the church in all ages. And His fearful denunciations of the scribes and Pharisees, and His warnings to the people NOT to follow these blind leaders, were placed on record as an admonition to future generations. Satan has taken full possession of the Churches as a body…. Many, Very Many, who profess to be Christians, Have Not Known God.
Why did Peter fail ? —It was his “Misconceptions of Biblical Truth.” Which caused him to fail because of his “self-sufficiency” and Peter fell because he did not know his own frailty. He thought himself strong. If Peter had learned the lessons he ought to have learned, if he had stood right with God at the time of his trial, he would have stood then. If he had not been indifferent to the lessons Christ taught, he would have never denied his Lord. Christian, Are you going to fail for the same reason?
FIRE ! FIRE !! FIRE !!! — “Don’t bother me, I’m sleeping.” — Your house is on FIRE, Flee Out ! Your about to die! — “I said, Don’t bother me, I can’t believe how rude some people are!” Z z z z Mat 15:9 “In vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments (religious precept) of men.” There is something that your life depends upon, that has been revealed and will again be revealed, and will continue to be revealed until the fulfilling of Daniel 12 verse 1. BUT, The majority will stumble over it, and quickly pick themselves up and rush on, trying to not let on that they even stumbled. It is very important as to how you understand and receive it, because a misunderstanding is as detrimental to your eternal welfare as if you entirely rejected it. A misconception of it will lead the professed christian into the wide road and there, Satan walks by their side and says: In order to make a success in this world you must serve me. I hold your welfare in my hands. I can give you riches, pleasures, honor, and happiness. Hearken to my counsel. Do not allow yourselves to be carried away with whimsical notions of honesty or self-sacrifice. I will prepare the way before you. Thus multitudes are deceived! ! ! !
The end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. 1 Peter. 4:7 God will not compel the service of any man, but God does reveal to man his obligation, unfolds to him the requirements of His holy law, and sets before him the result of his CHOICE — to obey and live, or to disobey and perish. “It shall be our righteousness, IF we observe to do all these Commandments before the LORD our God, as He hath commanded us.” And now, while the precious Saviour is making an atonement for us, we should seek to become perfect in Christ. If they refuse the heavenly benefit and Choose the pleasures and deceitfulness of sin, they have their choice, and at the end receive their wages, which is the wrath of God and eternal death. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Do you want the Wages or the Gift? The people are brought to the point of Choice, Will you Choose between the Commandments of God or the commandments of men? “Choose you this day whom ye will serve!” Before the time of probation is forever closed.
We should never study the Bible for the purpose of sustaining our preconceived opinions, but with the single object of learning what God has said. In your study of the word, lay at the door of investigation your preconceived opinions and your hereditary and cultivated ideas. Or you will never reach the truth if you study the Scriptures to vindicate your own ideas. Martin Luther as Zealous, ardent, and devoted, as he was, knew no fear but the fear of God, and acknowledging no foundation for religious faith but the Holy Scriptures,… His sterling good sense led him to regard the monastic system with distrust, ought it not to do the same for us? Trusting the Word of God or the Church; One leads to heaven the other to Hell.
The fact that a movement to establish error is connected with a work which is in itself good, is not an argument in favor of the error. We may disguise poison by mingling it with wholesome food, but we do not thereby change its nature. On the contrary, it is rendered more dangerous, as it is more likely to be taken unawares. Through the two great errors, the Immortality of the Soul and Sunday Sacredness, Satan will bring the people under his deceptions. In the near future we shall see these words fulfilled, as the Protestant churches unite with the world and with the papal power against commandment keepers. The 3 fold union! of Rev. 16:13-14 Any movement in favor of Religious Legislation is really an act of concession to the Papacy, which for so many ages has steadily warred against liberty of conscience. When our nation shall so abjure the principles of its government as to enact a Sunday law, Protestantism will in this act join hands with the Papacy;
The crisis is fast approaching. The rapidly swelling figures show that the time for God’s visitations has nearly come. Not one of us will ever receive the seal of God while our characters have one spot or stain upon them. It is left with us to remedy the defects in our characters, to cleanse the soul temple of every defilement. Our own course of action will determine whether we shall receive the seal of the living God, or be cut down by the destroying weapons. Already a few drops of God’s wrath have fallen upon the earth; but when the seven last plagues shall be poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation, then it will be forever too late to repent, and find shelter.
Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world! Or Behold the “Church” which is my salvation. Are you looking to a “Church” for salvation? As the majority do! The church has turned back from following Christ her Leader and is steadily retreating toward Egypt. God will surely condemn every member, of every church claiming to be Seventh-day Adventist! our own course of continual backsliding has separated us from God.
The command is given— rise to your high calling in Christ Jesus. We need every day to present ourselves before the Lord, praying with earnest soul-hunger, “Show me thy glory.” Exodus 33:18 The Lord has sent us messages of warning, declaring that the end of all things is at hand. When Lot warned the members of his family of the destruction of Sodom, they would NOT heed the message, but counted Lot as a raving enthusiast. They were unprepared for the destruction that came upon them. Thus it will be, when the Son of man is revealed. Farmers, merchants, lawyers, tradesmen, will be wholly engrossed in business, and the day of the Lord will come upon them as a snare. When men are at ease, full of amusement, absorbed in buying and selling, the prowling thief approaches with stealthy tread. So it will be at the Coming of the Son of Man.
Now, in probationary time, we are all on test and trial. The life and death question with us is,… “What shall I do, that I may be saved; eternally saved?” “What shall I do, that I may inherit eternal life—a life that measures with the life of God?” We are to put into practice the precepts of the law, and thus have righteousness before us; the rearward will be God’s glory. The light of the righteousness of Christ will be our frontguard, and the glory of the Lord will be our rearward. Let us thank the Lord for this assistance. Sin is Sin; righteousness is righteousness. We cannot afford to make a mistake in spiritual matters. The life and death question with us is, “What shall I do that I may be saved, eternally saved?”Rev 22:17 “What shall I do that I may inherit eternal life—a life that measures with the life of God?” This is a question that it becomes every one of us to consider carefully.
Let no man present the idea that man has little or nothing to do in the great work of overcoming; for God does nothing for man without his co-operation. Neither say that after you have done all you can on your part, Jesus will help you. Christ has said, “Without Me ye can do nothing.” Man’s efforts alone are nothing but worthlessness; but co-operation with Christ means a victory. Of ourselves we have no power to repent of sin. Unless we accept divine aid we cannot take the first step toward the Saviour. He says, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end,”Rev 22:13 in the salvation of every soul.
My people know NOT the judgment of the LORD. The Judgments of the Almighty are speedily coming, “Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.” Mark 13:33 “Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that Sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” Eph 5:14, 16 “Now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. Romans 13:11We have only a little longer time in which to prepare for eternity. May the Lord open the closed eyes of his professed people and quicken their dulled senses, that they may comprehend the great truths of the gospel, and the message of the Hour. The days in which we live are eventful and full of peril. The signs of the coming of the end are thickening around us, and events are to come to pass that will be of a more terrible character than any the world has yet witnessed. We want something besides Sabbath religion! We need the living principle, and to daily feel individual responsibility. Where is the spirituality of the church? Where are men and women full of faith and the Holy Spirit? We must make it manifest that we are not only Bible readers, but Bible believers.
The importance and benefit of Bible study cannot be overestimated. The probation of any one of us may cease in a moment. Death by accident may suddenly and unexpectedly close our earthly history. Keep ever before you the solemn event of the judgment. “And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world,…” John 9:39 Consecrate yourself to God in the morning; make this your very first work. Let your prayer be, “Take me, O Lord, as wholly Thine. I lay all my plans at Thy feet. Use me today in Thy service. Abide with me, and let all my work be wrought in Thee.” This is a daily matter. Each morning consecrate yourself to God for that day. God’s professed people are not prepared for the events ahead.
All should understand the nature of the great controversy between Christ and Satan, and should realize that it concerns themselves. The battle between the army of Christ and the army of Satan is going on. The angels of God are round about those who are obedient to Christ, as a wall of fire. We need them, for Satan is always seeking to cast his hellish shadow between us and God. Professed believers in Christ are many, but FEW have an experimental knowledge of Him. To all practical purposes, they are ignorant of Christ. They know Him afar off, but they (the many sleeping virgins of Matthew 24) have no true conception of Him. Many acknowledge Jesus as the world’s Redeemer, they talk about Him, but they don’t know Him, not as a personal Saviour; but—This is Essential, To Our Salvation. To Know Him, and Make Him known, is our business here! “And this is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” John 17:3
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Heb 10:31Ministers and people lack spirituality and true godliness. Every thing is to be shaken that can be shaken. Zep. 2:1-3 Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation NOT desired; “I have somewhat against thee,”[Rev. 2:3] says the True Witness, “because thou hast left thy first love.”[Rev. 3:4] And he says, “Except thou repent,”[Rev 2:5] “I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place.”[Rev. 3:5] Why?—Because in our Separation from one another we are Separated from Christ. We want to Press together. “Press together, press together, press together. Do not let Satan cast his hellish shadow between brethren. Press together; in unity there is strength.”
The end is near, stealing upon us stealthily, imperceptibly like the noiseless approach of a thief in the night. There must be NO long discussions, presenting NEW THEORIES in regard to the prophecies which God has already made plain. John was called to behold a people distinct from those who worship the beast or his image by keeping the first day of the week. The observance of this day IS the mark of the beast.
“Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him.” Psalm 103:13 I would like to call your attention to the parable of the prodigal son. He made a request that his father should give him his portion of the estate. He desired to separate his interest from his father, and manage his share as best suited his own inclination. Learn who the players are in this parable and how it will effect your life. “Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” Gal. 4:7
There is great need of an increase of knowledge in every line of health reform, and of bringing health reform into the Practical Life. The Jews were commanded to offer in sacrifice to God only such animals as were Free from Disease or Blemish. So Christians are required to preserve all their powers in the Best Possible Condition for the Lord’s service. Says Peter, “Abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.” [1 Peter 2:11.] The Word of God will make but a feeble impression upon those whose faculties are benumbed by ANY sinful gratification. The heart cannot preserve consecration to God while the animal appetites and passions are indulged at the expense of health and life. If the soul is to be purified and ennobled, and made fit for the heavenly courts, there are two lessons to be learned,—self-sacrifice and self-control.
How do we, individually stand before God? We must make a decided change. Let us awake out of sleep. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the Devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come: Rev. 14:7 The subject of the sanctuary and the investigative Judgment should be clearly understood by the people of God. Step by step has God brought us along, until he had placed us upon a solid, immovable platform. Do you trust Him?
There is no subject of more solemn importance to human happiness than prayer. “It is that language wherein a creature holds correspondence with his Creator; and wherein the soul of a saint gets near to God, is entertained with great delight, and, as it were, dwells with his heavenly Father.” God, when manifest in the flesh, hath given us a solemn, sweeping declaration, embracing all prayer—private, social, and public—at all times and seasons, from the creation to the final consummation of all things— “God is a Spirit, and they that worship him MUST WORSHIP HIM IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH” John 4:24. If ever there was a time when every house should be a house of prayer, it is NOW. Infidelity and skepticism are prevailing. Iniquity abounds, and in consequence, the love of many waxes cold. Corruption flows in the vital currents of the soul, and rebellion against our heavenly Father breaks out in the life.
Paradox— A seemingly absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition contrary to received opinion, or seemingly absurd, yet true in fact. The Purification of the people of God CANNOT be accomplished without their suffering. God permits the fires of affliction to consume the dross, to separate the worthless from the valuable and let the pure metal shine forth.“Our lives will not be all sunshine; there will be trials. “In the world ye shall have tribulation,” says Christ; but in me ye shall have peace. But the Trials are for a purpose. Pride, selfishness, evil passions, and love of worldly pleasures, must all be overcome; therefore afflictions come to test and prove us, and show that these evils exist in the character. We must NOT think, when we are afflicted, that the anger of the Lord is upon us. God brings us into trials, in order that we may be drawn near to Him. The psalmist says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.”
Can we re-apply time prophecies? No longer consent to listen without protest to the perversion of truth. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. Col 2:8 The Lord has shown me that the message of the Third Angel must go, and be proclaimed to the scattered children of the Lord, but it must not be hung on time. I saw that some were getting a false excitement, arising from preaching time; but the Third Angel’s Message is stronger than time can be. I saw that this message can stand on its own foundation and needs not time to strengthen it; Again and again have I been WARNED in regard to Time-Setting. There will NEVER AGAIN be a message for the people of God that will be BASED ON TIME. We are not to know the definite time either for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit or for the coming of Christ.
FEW THERE BE THAT FIND IT — Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many (majority, multitude) there be which go in thereat: A few faithful men arose from time to time, to proclaim new truth, and expose long-cherished error; but the MAJORITY, like the Jews in Christ’s day, or the papists in the time of Luther, were content to believe as their fathers believed, and to live as they lived. Truth is no more desired by the MAJORITY today than it was by the papists who opposed Luther. “Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and FEW there be that find it.” Mat 7:14 In every age, God has called his servants to lift up their voices against the prevailing errors and sins of the MULTITUDE. Noah was called to stand alone to warn the antediluvian world. Moses and Aaron were alone against king and princes, magicians and wise men, and the multitudes of Egypt. Elijah was alone when he testified against an apostate king and a backsliding people. Daniel and his fellows stood alone against the decrees of mighty monarchs. The majority are usually to be found on the side of error and falsehood. The fact that doctors of divinity have the world on their side does not prove them to be on the side of truth and of God. The wide gate and the broad road attract the multitudes, while the strait gate and the narrow way are sought only by the FEW. “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye Separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,” 2Co 6:17
ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE?– Those who profess to be the representatives of Christ upon earth, yet whose lives are a continual denial of Him, may read their own condemnation in Christ’s denunciation of the self-righteous Jews. The experience of the past will be repeated. In the future, Satan’s superstitions will assume new forms. Errors will be presented in a pleasing and flattering manner. False theories, clothed with garments of light, will be presented to God’s people. Thus Satan will TRY to deceive, IF POSSIBLE, THE VERY ELECT. Most seducing influences will be exerted; minds will be hypnotized. Satan will employ the power of mind over mind to carry out his designs. [ie. Spiritual formation, NLP, Mesmerism, etc.] The most sorrowful thought of all is that under his deceptive influence men will have a form of godliness, without having a real connection with God. The teachers of Spiritualism will come in a pleasing, bewitching manner to deceive you, and IF YOU LISTEN TO THEIR FABLES YOU ARE BEGUILED by the enemy of righteousness, and will surely lose your reward.
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT– Your Health is important ! You are what you eat ! Sickness is caused by violating the laws of health. Therefore, sickness is the result of nature’s violated law. Our first duty we owe to God, to ourselves, and our fellow-men, is to Obey the Laws of God, which include the Laws of Health. There are but few animals that are free from disease. State in 1899, is it any better today? Disease is conveyed to the liver, and the entire system of the animal is diseased. It is killed, and prepared for the market, and people eat freely of this poisonous animal food. Much disease is caused in this manner. But people will not believe that the meat they have eaten has poisoned their blood, and caused their sufferings. Many die of disease caused wholly by meat-eating, yet the world does not seem to be the wiser.
MURMURING, FAULT FINDING, AND EVIL SPEAKING– Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and ALL evil speakings, 1Peter. 2:1 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves. John 6:43 Neither MURMUR ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.1Co 10:10 —this faithful picture is hung up before us as a WARNING lest we follow their example of disobedience, and fall like them. “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth.” Ephesians 4:29. A corrupt communication does not mean only words that are vile. It means Any Expression contrary to holy principles and pure and undefiled religion.
WITCH HOLIDAY– What does Halloween mean? The word Halloween literally means the evening before All Hallows Day (or All Saint’s Day) celebrated on November 1. Halloween is also the shortened name of Allhalloween, “All Hallows” Evening and All Saint’s Eve which is celebrated on October 31. The origin and meaning of Halloween are derived from ancient Celtic harvest festivals, but more recently the majority think of Halloween as a night filled with candy, trick-or-treating, pumpkins, parties, ghosts and death. Spiritualism is now changing its form, veiling some of its more objectionable and immoral features, and assuming a Christian guise. Formerly it denounced Christ and the Bible; now it professes to accept both. Witchcraft and sorcery are practiced in this Christian age and Christian nation, even more boldly than by the old-time magicians. Satan is finding access to thousands of minds by presenting himself under the guise of departed friends. “And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die” Gen. 3:4
